For around 2000 bucks. I think it’s worth it. Wife is fearful of the car having another issue following this. What does OPPO say?

1. Spend $2,000
2. Downplay every strange noise or behavior for the next 3 years as “totally normal” to the wife.
3. GOTO 1
Sounds about right.

Eh, I haven’t had good luck with cars that “just needed another $2000 put into it.”

What is it, dare I ask, that’s requiring 2,000 of your hard-earned dollars?
PS this is the precise reason I do NOT own one of these. I came very, very close - on more than one occasion - but could not stomach the periodic $1,000-$2,000 repairs. On top of the usual little stuff that comes with the territory already...

Ouch. Well, I’ll quote the service manager at a marina where I used to work: “It’s no good like it is!” As in, it’s worth WAY less in its current state than if you fixed it. So even selling it as-is would be a worse outcome for you than paying the money to fix it and either selling it or letting it ride, so to speak, until the next big repair.

Wow. That’s an expensive shop you’ve got there. How many hours would they need to do all that work, as the parts costs are
negligible
.

Every other shop we were north of 4 grand so this is the cheapest shop I have found.

That’s absurd. How much do they tend to charge per hour? It’s not like a Volvo like that is a complicated or exotic car. I imagine it’s a time consuming but rather straight forward and simple job for an experienced mechanic.
Ask around on a Volvo forum. They might be able to help out.

I called up every “Volvo” and Europeian specialist in my area (DC/Annapolis/Baltimore)
The people who will touch Volvo’s cost around 120 dollars an hour in labor.
This guy is the cheapest at around 90 an hour

I’m staring at my monitor in disbelief.
Also, don’t you ‘know a guy’? My trusty off the books mechanic works on everything I throw at him, including my 1980s stuff (BMW, Peugeot) and does it well. For 25 an hour. Less if I allow him to take his time.

Usually “machine block” means buy engine. But volvo is volvo.

On the other side of the ocean, where the minimum wage is the equivalent of almost $11 US an hour.
I did misread you though. I thought you were talking about the 740, not the V70. That does increase the price somewhat I imagine.

Yeah, I am assumeing if the block is warped or something they will not mess with it, but I don’t know, misspoke a little there I guess
I assume that the head will be machined because I assume it’s warped, but I don't know for sure

Yeah head gasket is a little more then $35 bucks, 230 for a whole set iirc
But yeah this area’s mechanics are very well compensated for very little work

Generally, machining an aluminum head is always a good idea. I wasn’t trying to point you out for saying something wrong. I was just really curious, not familiar with the swedish moose mobiles.

Was the head not machined the first time you did the head gasket? The cylinder liners on that engine have small lines between them that need to be measured for liner shift. If they are out of spec and they almost always are if the engine was over heated you need a new block or the cylinders rebored.
